  1. Calvin cycle

The Calvin cycle occurs in stroma and is also called the C3 pathway. Its stages are carboxylation, reduction and regeneration. RuBisCO fixes carbon dioxide with RuBP, producing 3-phosphoglyceric acid as the first stable product.

  1. Photorespiration

Photorespiration starts when RuBisCO acts as oxygenase. NCERT states that this pathway does not produce ATP or NADPH and causes loss of fixed carbon.

  1. C4 pathway

C4 plants show Kranz anatomy. Initial carbon fixation occurs through PEP carboxylase in mesophyll cells, producing oxaloacetic acid. Bundle sheath cells later carry out the Calvin cycle.
