Is Biotechnology Botany or Zoology in NEET?

Biotechnology is filed under Zoology in NEET by most coaching, even though its examples are plants. Here is why, the class and unit, and its high marks weightage.

The short answer

Zoology, in almost every coaching classification. Both biotechnology chapters — Biotechnology: Principles and Processes, and Biotechnology and Its Applications — are filed under Zoology.

This surprises students, because the famous examples are plants: Bt cotton, Golden Rice, Flavr Savr tomato. But the chapters still sit on the Zoology side. As always, the label does not change your marks — NEET gives one Biology score.

Why it goes with Zoology

Both chapters are in Class 12 NCERT, in the unit "Biotechnology and Its Applications". Coaching institutes teach genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology together as one block, and that block is filed under Zoology. So biotechnology follows genetics into Zoology.

The plant examples throw people off, but the core skills — recombinant DNA, PCR, cloning vectors, gene therapy — are the same tools used across the genetics block.

How many marks is Biotechnology worth?

This is one of the highest-yield areas in NEET Biology. The two chapters together give roughly 5 to 6 questions a year — close to 10% of the Biology paper, or 20 to 24 marks.

Biotechnology: Principles and Processes alone is often the single heaviest chapter after Molecular Basis of Inheritance. Do not leave it for the last week.
