Is Genetics Botany or Zoology in NEET?

Zoology, in almost every coaching classification. Both genetics chapters — Principles of Inheritance and Variation, and Molecular Basis of Inheritance — are filed under Zoology.

Students expect Botany, because Mendel did his experiments on pea plants. But coaching teaches the whole genetics-and-molecular-biology block under Zoology. The label does not change your marks — NEET gives one Biology score.

Both chapters are in Class 12 NCERT, in the unit "Genetics and Evolution". Coaching groups genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology into one Zoology block, because the tools and the human-disease examples all connect.

Mendel's pea plants are just the starting example. The bulk of the marks comes from DNA structure, replication, transcription, translation, and human genetic disorders — all firmly on the Zoology side.

Genetics is the single most important area in NEET Biology. Molecular Basis of Inheritance alone is usually the highest-weightage chapter, around 8 to 9% of the Biology paper. With Principles of Inheritance and Variation added, genetics gives roughly 6 to 8 questions a year — 24 to 32 marks.
