Parts of the eye

Cornea

Transparent front layer that lets light in and does most of the focusing.

Iris

Coloured muscular diaphragm that controls the size of the pupil and light entering.

Optic nerve

Carries visual nerve impulses from the retina to the brain.

Eye — the NCERT essentials

NCERT — Neural Control and Coordination. Light enters through the transparent cornea, passes the pupil (whose size is adjusted by the iris), and is focused by the lens onto the retina.

The retina carries two kinds of photoreceptor cells: rods, which contain rhodopsin and work in dim light, and cones, which are responsible for colour vision and work in bright light. The fovea (yellow spot) has the greatest density of cones and is the point of sharpest vision.

Photoreceptors convert light into nerve impulses that travel along the optic nerve to the brain, where the image is interpreted.

Did you know? The point where the optic nerve leaves the retina has no photoreceptors — the blind spot.
