Intestine — the NCERT essentials
NCERT — Digestion and Absorption. The small intestine has three parts: the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Here, bile from the liver and pancreatic juice from the pancreas, along with intestinal (succus entericus) enzymes, complete the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
The inner wall of the small intestine is folded into finger-like villi, and each villus cell bears microvilli. Together they form a brush border that massively increases the surface area for absorption of digested nutrients into the blood and lymph.
The large intestine (colon) does little digestion; its main role is absorption of water and some minerals, leaving semi-solid faeces.
