Liver — the NCERT essentials
NCERT — Digestion and Absorption. The liver is the largest gland in the human body. Its cells (hepatocytes) secrete bile, which is stored and concentrated in the gall bladder and released into the duodenum.
Bile contains bile pigments (bilirubin) and bile salts but no digestive enzymes. Bile salts emulsify fats — breaking large fat droplets into smaller ones so that enzymes can act on them more easily.
The liver also stores excess glucose as glycogen, carries out deamination of amino acids, forms urea, and detoxifies harmful substances in the blood.
