Skin — the NCERT essentials
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and forms the integumentary system. It has three layers: the outer epidermis, the middle dermis, and the inner hypodermis (subcutaneous fat).
The epidermis contains the pigment melanin, which protects deeper tissues from UV radiation. The dermis holds blood vessels, nerve endings, sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles.
Skin protects against injury and infection, prevents water loss, senses touch, pressure, heat and pain, helps regulate body temperature through sweating, and synthesises vitamin D in sunlight.
